Adventurers in Music
As part of the Olympic Torch Relay events in Liskeard on 19th May, Carn to Cove is working on the dramatic part of a newly commissioned music drama, written in seven episodes, which has been commissioned by the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site Cultural Programme.
Our WHS status reinforces our cultural distinctiveness, and the values, themes and stories of this heritage have been celebrated by creating a new piece of work which brings together music from brass bands from around Cornwall, with a dramatic story told by a cast of talented Cornish actors.
The score has been composed by Cornish composer Simon Dobson. His work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and in many of the leading concert halls in the world.
In 2009 his work Penlee - a tribute to the crew of the Penlee lifeboat - was shortlisted for the BASCA award. Simon also music directed the highly successful large scale open space play Gonamena on Bodmin Moor in 2009.
Brass players and brass bands of all ages and skills levels from all around Cornwall attended a Scratch rehearsal and performance of this new work in March. Seven movements or episodes with water as the theme have been created by the composer and lyricist Jane Pugh, each within the "ownership" of a discreet performing group with expressive power and challenging technical requirements.
Following on from the music rehearsal and scratch performance at Heartlands in March, Carn to Cover has commissioned a young company to work on the dramatic elements of Adventurers in Music written by Jane Pugh during the day and put on a mini performance as part of the public staged events at 15.30. Rising actor Ciaran Clarke and Producer Nix Wood will lead a company of 8 in developing the work as well as potentially incorporating community volunteers in sessions to take place at the Liskerett Centre from 10.a.m. – people passing through will be welcome to watch or take part.
